Storeguide 2023: Cologne – Food
Whether market research sales area with the latest test products, discounter branch with local color or high-tech hybrid store: the supermarket concepts in Cologne are diverse and worth a visit.
Aldi Süd
Aachener Straße/Ecke Moltkestraße, 50674 Köln
The discounter’s smallest Cologne branch is located in the Belgian Quarter, where Aldi presents a customised store concept on 794 sqm of floor space or 539 sqm of sales area. Customers enter and exit at different points and follow a ‘one-way street’ through the store. The checkouts feature shortened belts and cashiers stand; the product range is also slightly reduced.
Go 2 Market
Aachener Str. 519, 50933 Köln
The go2market is the first German real-life market research supermarket. Opened in Cologne-Braunsfeld in June 2021, it gives a selected group of consumers access to food products that are not yet known in Germany. Innovative technologies provide insights into purchasing behaviour.
Lidl
Weyerstraße 108-112, 50676 Köln
The discounter’s 920-sqm store at Barbarossaplatz received an award for its energy efficiency. It was built sustainably and does not use any fossil fuels. The new store concept features clearly displayed goods, high-quality furnishings, wide aisles and a glass front that lets in lots of natural light. The focus is on a wide range of fresh products.
Penny „Kölsch Hätz“
Eigelstein 51, 50668 Köln
Located right near the Cologne cathedral, the grocery store is designed to attract both residents and tourists alike. The store exudes an undeniable Cologne feel with regional beer-themed chandeliers, a frozen food section that looks like the Cologne Sharks ice hockey arena and a small FC Cologne fan shop.
Rewe Pick & Go
Zeppelinstraße 2, 50667 Köln
The food retailer’s pilot hybrid shopping store opened in 2021. Customers can either check out at a register or use an app to pay for their items without waiting. The autonomous check-out uses cameras and sensors, and Rewe is now rolling out the concept in more German cities.
Superbiomarkt
Hohenstaufenring 28, 50674 Köln
In the former Basic branch on Zülpicher Platz, Superbiomarkt AG has opened a new specialist market that uses elements that are as sustainable and resource-saving as possible and the latest technical systems. Not only groceries are on offer: the company from Münster has rented 130 sqm of the approximately 1,060 sqm sales area to the sustainable fashion retailer Ettics.
Rewe Richrath
Schwertnergasse 1, 50667 Köln
The Rewe store in Cologne’s city centre is modern with a trendy urban design. At the entrance to the store are food stands selling products such as pasta, barista-made coffee and sushi. With eye-catching decorations, like a bright red tractor, there is always something new to discover.
Tante Olga
Viersener Str. 6, 50733 Köln/Berrenrather Str. 406, 50937 Köln
Handcrafted materials from sustainably farmed forests characterise these two food stores that have done away with plastic bags, cups and packaging as part of their zero-waste strategy. In addition to an assortment of dried organic foods and cosmetics, there is also a coffee bar.
